Rodents at Thanksgiving…

You may have enjoyed the recent viral video hit, “Tiny Hamster Thanksgiving”, in which a few lucky pet hamsters and a rabbit were all (adorably) treated to a miniature Thanksgiving feast. The cute video is fun to watch, but surely most homeowners don’t want to host their own ‘Tiny Rodent’ holiday for unwelcome rats and mice! Following these tips, and enlisting the help of J&J Exterminating should help you keep your home free from unwanted guests of the furry variety.

  • Apply weather stripping around foundation and windows. You can purchase weather stripping fairly inexpensively at most hardware and home improvement stores and do it yourself. It’s an easy fix that will not only help keep pests out, it will help keep heat in and reduce your home heating costs.
  • Install door sweeps as well, which will help keep out drafts and pests.
  • Rats and mice are notoriously flexible and can squeeze their bodies through the smallest openings. Seal any remaining cracks or holes in the walls or foundation of your home.
  • Store food in airtight containers to minimize the allure of food to hungry rodents.
  • Clean out your attic, garage and extra rooms. Cluttered, rarely disturbed areas make an attractive nesting spot for mice. Keeping these areas neat and clean will send a signal that these spots are not open for business to rodents!
  • Tend to your yard and surrounding vegetation as well, as these can be a literal ‘bridge’ for mice and rats to jump onto your roof and enter your home. Trim back tress, bushes and hedges.
  • Contact J&J Exterminating for Alexandria, LA rodent control to help prevent, eradicate, and keep rodents out of your home or business. Our comprehensive approach to pest management employs smart strategies and reduced chemicals for long term relief from pests.

Dampwood Termites Will Spread Their Feces Around Your House

Dampwood Termites Will Spread Their Feces Around Your House

Eastern subterranean termites are the most common termites in the United States. These termites cause the greatest amount of damage to homes, and they are found in every state except for Alaska. Dampwood termites are not as well known as their subterranean relatives, but they can easily infest homes as well. Unlike subterranean termites, dampwood termites do not build mud tubes from the ground in order to access a home. Dampwood termites come into contact with houses only when the wood from a house makes direct contact with soil. However, most dampwood termites do not inhabit soil; instead, these termites reside mainly within damp wood logs. Obviously, subterranean termites are the most common termite pests because their mud tubes make them more inventive when it comes to accessing houses. If a home is found to be infested with termites, then there is a ninety percent chance that the invading termites are subterranean. The widespread hatred that so many people have for termites is due to the subterranean termites house-destroying activities. However, a dampwood termite infestation can be just as traumatic for homeowners. In fact, due to the disgusting nature of dampwood termite behavior, homeowners may find these termites to be much more problematic than subterranean termites.

Luckily, preventing dampwood termite infestations can be a relatively easy task, as these termites are attracted to water damaged wood. Making sure your home is free of water damaged wood, especially when such wood is in contact with soil, is necessary in order to prevent dampwood termite infestations. Also, do not bring damp wood into your home for any reason. Examples of damp wood often brought into homes include firewood and wooden furniture that had been left outdoors. Having a dampwood termite infestation can be dangerous for homeowners. The mass amounts of fecal matter involved with dampwood termite nest-building has to be the most negative aspect of a home infestation.

Dampwood termites build their nests out of their own feces. These poop-nests, if you will, can be hard to detect because they do not smell like you would expect. According to entomologist Michael Scharf, of Purdue University, the dampwood termite nest smells “smoky.” In case you begin to smell something smokey in your home, and cannot find the source, consider the possibility of a dampwood termite infestation. This idea is especially worth considering if you live within the Pacific northwest region of the United States, as dampwood termites are more common in this area. Calling a pest control professional once your house begins to smell smokey can prevent dampwood termites from turning your home into their own personal toilet.

Have you ever smelled something peculiar in your home, but could not pinpoint the source? If you have, did you eventually discover that the cause of the mysterious odor was the result of an insect presence?

Can Termites Bite People?

It is no secret that termites can cause damage to wood-made structures. The economic costs of termite damage only seems to increase each year. Southern Florida is even dealing with a new species of invasive termite. It goes without saying that homeowners do not appreciate discovering termite infestations on their property; but is damaged wood, and decreased property values, all we need to worry about when it comes to the presence of termites? After all, termites are insects, and many insects are known to bite animals and humans.

Obviously, termites possess some pretty strong mouthparts, so could termites bite people? If termites can bite people, then would the bite wound become a serious medical concern? We don’t hear about termite bites often, as they seem to prefer using their mouthparts on wood and plant matter. However, termites are certainly capable of biting humans, and their are several reports from the past that seem to support this claim.

It should be understood that termite bites are incredibly rare. An emergency room doctor will likely never encounter a victim of a termite bite during the entirety of his/her career. That being said, some termites can easily bite humans, while other termites are not even capable of biting a human. For example, only termite kings and soldiers are capable of puncturing human skin, but these bites are rarely even felt by humans. Other termite colony members do not possess large enough mouthparts to truly bite through human skin.

Right off the bat, it would seem like termite bites could never inflict any real damage to a person. However, some termites are quite large in size, such as Formosan subterranean termites. These termites are large enough to draw blood when biting humans. Termites, like most insects, are not aggressive towards humans, so they will not bite unless they are properly provoked.

The vast majority of termite bites are harmless. However, some people could possess an allergy to insect bites, including termite bites. Even in these cases termite bites will not result in anything more than a red welt and a bit of itching, similar to a mosquito bite. Termite bites, however, do happen, and in cases where symptoms last for more than three days, a doctor should be consulted.

What is the smallest type of insect that has ever bitten you, with the exception of a mosquito? What were the symptoms of the bite, if any?

A Man Was Attacked By Flesh Eating Ants While In A Hospital

A Man Was Attacked By Flesh Eating Ants While In A Hospital

We have all heard rumors about flesh eating ants. Some of these ants are known for consuming livestock, and sometimes we even hear about unfortunate individuals consumed to death by armies of flesh eating ants. It turns out that these rumors may not be far from the truth, as the world is full of ravenous ants that will eat anything. One such example of a human being consumed by ants occurred in an American hospital. A seventy six year old man by the name of Cornelius Lewis was in the hospital as a result of complications with his pacemaker. Little did the doctors and hospital staff know, but Lewis was being consumed by numerous ants underneath his bedsheets.

Lewis was in the intensive care portion of the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Florida. Lewis had been lying in the hospital bed for one day before ants began to attack his legs and genitals while he was unconscious following a surgery. Later on, to the horror of medical orderlies, the ants had been discovered infesting his lower half. Lewis remained at the hospital and was reported as being in a “serious condition,” but the hospital spokesperson claims that the worsening of his condition was unrelated to the ant attack.

According to the victim’s son, Lewis was bitten hundreds of times by pavement ants while lying in his hospital bed. The son went on to say that the hospital staff were supposed to check Lewis every ten minutes. Lewis was promptly moved to another room, however, his new room had also been infested with ants. The hospital, which is run by the Lee Memorial Health System, has admitted to the ant attack. The Memorial Health System has said that they are doing everything they can to rid the hospital of ants, and to prevent any similar attacks in the future. The intensive care unit at the hospital has been evacuated, and pest control professionals are ridding the area of all ants.

Have you ever spotted an insect in a hospital? Have you ever heard of a hospital being infested with any type of insect species? If you have, where was the hospital?

Family Outside Enjoying their Pest Free Yard

Pest Control Professionals Can Make Life More Comfortable Year-Round

Family Outside Enjoying their Pest Free Yard

Mild Louisiana weather is great for entertaining guests, relaxing on the patio or watching the kids play. However, our mild weather is also enjoyed by many pests like flies, ants, cockroaches, spiders, and mosquitoes. That is why exterminators can make life more comfortable year-round when you invite them to come first. Here is how pest control experts can help:

Exterminators Can Protect the Outside of Your Home

Do you usually think of calling extermination services only when you have an insect problem inside your home? In fact, pest professionals focus on taking care of pests that spread disease throughout your whole property. Using safe products, exterminators can eliminate those pests from both inside and outside, allowing you to use your space year-round.

Bug Killing Experts Work Better than DIY Pest Control

Whether you swat at mosquitoes and flies or use a DIY pest control method, you are really just swatting at the tip of the iceberg. In contrast, extermination technicians are professionally trained to carefully examine your property and not only kill the bugs you see but prevent more from showing up. By using regular pest extermination services, you can fight back against these invaders and take control of your property again.

Local Exterminators Are Proactive

Taking care of the pests outside your home helps to eliminate problems indoors. The pests you see are only a fraction of the ones that are living and breeding on your property. By hiring regular exterminating services, you will have an expert who can proactively tackle your pest problem and make sure you don’t have to worry about it.

Extermination Services Help Keep Your Family Healthy

Think that flies are just a pest? Think again. According to research, flies are actually twice as likely to carry germs to harm your health than cockroaches. In fact, every time a fly lands on your food or utensils, they leave thousands of germs that could cause your family or friends to get sick. Moreover, mosquitoes aren’t just annoying, they can carry diseases too. Regular pest control treatments will ensure your family stays healthy.

Pest Professionals Give Expert Advice

Contracting with a local exterminator means that you have access to advice about any pest problem that you encounter. In addition, they can give you tips for different situations, such as an outdoor picnic which might be at a location that draws flies. At a tailgate or other picnic situation, exterminators advise these steps:

  • Locate Away from Odor: Flies are attracted to trash and other strong odors, so don’t choose a location close to a bathroom or trash collection area.
  • Look for a Breeze: Choose a location with airflow or use a fan if possible. Most mosquitos and flies are not strong fliers and a fan can keep them away from your area.
  • Keep Food Safe: Use cold or hot pack containers to keep foods at a safe temperature except when serving. Use covers on dishes to keep out pests.
  • Cover Garbage: Trash is particularly attractive to pests, so cover trash cans or consider bringing your own bags and clips to keep the garbage in and the bugs out.

Pest Exterminators Enhance Your Property Value

By keeping your yard pest free year round, bug extermination services may be the best investment you could make in your property. Without bugs to contend with, your family can enjoy your outdoor spaces and make the most of the pleasant Louisiana fall weather.
