Common Ants Found in The Home

There are almost 12,000 species of ants all over the world. But only a tiny fraction of these species can invade your home. Let us discuss the number of ant species that can invade your home depending upon the number of factors such as appearance, habitat, and the region where you live. The humps or a node on the ant’s body identifies the species of ants. Some ants can bite or sting. The size and color of the ants differ according to the species.

Let us look at some of the ant species that invade your home.

Acrobat Ants:

Acrobat ants are about 2.5 to 3 millimeters long with two nodes. These ants have yellow black to red-black color. They resemble a scorpion when these acrobat ants get threatened by lifting their abdomens above their heads. It appears as if they are tumbling, hence known as “acrobat ants.”

These ants mostly make their nests inside the moist wood or damaged wood structures inside your house.

Argentine Ants:

Argentine Ants have only one node with about 2.2 to 3 millimeters long. These ants have a light to dark brown color.

These ants have a musty smell and cannot sting. They nest in shadier places during the summers and in the voids and wall insulations when indoors.

Asian Needle Ants:

Asian needle ants have only one node, about 5 millimeters long. They have dark orange mandibles and nests in shadier places during summers. These ant species are less aggressive and will only sting if exposed to human skin or trapped in clothes. When indoors, these ants mostly live in moisture places.

Carpenter Ants:

There are multiple variations of carpenter ants with an average length of about 6 to 13 millimeters. These ants have the habit of excavating the wood to build their nests. Carpenter ants prefer roof or woodwork areas near moisture to establish their nests. Houses with wooden elements have a risk of damage.

Crazy Ants:

Crazy Ants have only one node with about 2.2 to 3 millimeters long. They have a long antenna with black and brown color. They love to build their nests in moist or dry environments in plants, soil, heavy vegetation, mulch, and garbage and found in houseplants, in wall voids, and under the carpets when indoors.

Dark rover ants:

Dark rover ants have only one node, about 1.6 millimeters long. They have medium to dark brown color. They build their nests around the parking lots, on the grass edges, and sometimes found in bathrooms or kitchens inside the house.

Fire ants:

Fire ants have two nodes, about 4 to 5 millimeters long. They have a light reddish-brown color. These ants species build their nests in the gardens, lawns, and under bathtubs, water heaters, or other warm areas with moisture inside the house. They have an aggressive nature and also sting when disturbed.
